STRENGTHENING FAMILIES

FOSS - Work Experience

Every student needs a support system, and nothing compares to the support of a family. That is why FOSS has partnered up with The Riverside County, to bring the Strengthening Families program to the Coachella Valley. Through several weeks of training, families will learn the many skills needed to be as strong as the family can be. The truth is, all families can use a little help sometimes.

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk and general population families. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly improve parenting skills and family relationships, reduce problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills.

Making a difference…

Parents want to protect their children, but it’s challenging. Youth need skills to help them resist the peer pressure that leads to risky behaviors. Research shows that protective parenting improves family relationships and decreases the level of family conflict, contributing to lower levels of substance use.

This scientifically tested curriculum:

  • Helps parents/caregivers learn nurturing skills that support their children
  • Teaches parents/caregivers how to effectively discipline and guide their youth
  • Gives youth a healthy future orientation and an increased appreciation of their parents/caregivers, and teaches youth skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure

The program is taught with 7-10 families over fourteen weeks, usually in the evenings. It is recommended that the group size be smaller when dealing with families where parents have begun to have concerns over the problematic behavior of their youth.

Risk Factors

  • Aggressive or withdrawn behavior
  • Negative peer influence
  • Poor school performance
  • Lack of pro-social goals
  • Poor relationship with parents

Protective Factors

  • Positive future orientation
  • Peer pressure resistance skills
  • Pro-social peer relationships
  • Positive management of emotions
  • Empathy with parents

Our Vision having a community where all young men and women achieve their potential, we have Music programs so that any of our students no matter the age can have an outlet. We believe music is an outlet to channel emotions, express feelings and be productive all at the same time, studies have shown that learning music helps with all other school subjects. We teach Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums. So think about enrolling your child in music this year. Attached are some pictures from our Strengthening Families Program Graduation Day. Thank again everyone for all your support and let’s once again this year be successful and reach out to our community to help everyone.
